Mutlu Arat graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1991, trained in internal medicine and then in haematology at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, and spent 1996–1997 at the bone marrow transplant unit of Donauspital, University of Vienna, as an Austrian government scholar. He was associate professor of haematology at Ankara University from 2004 to 2009 and was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota bone marrow transplant unit in 2008. From 2010 he founded and directed the adult haematopoietic stem cell transplantation unit at Şişli Florence Nightingale Hospital, and he has practised at Memorial Şişli since 2024 and Memorial Göztepe since 2025. He served as General Secretary of the Turkish Society of Haematology (2004–2010), chaired its stem cell transplantation scientific committee (2013–2018), and has been a JACIE inspector and a secretary of the EBMT Leukaemia Working Party (2006–2012).
