Frequently asked about Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery

Should I have open or closed rhinoplasty?
Open rhinoplasty (small columellar incision) gives the surgeon direct visualization and is preferred for revision cases, complex tip work, severe deviation, and ethnic noses. Closed rhinoplasty leaves no external scar and is suited to small dorsal humps and minor tip refinement. At Memorial and Liv, ~70% of primary cases are done open because long-term results are more predictable.
Which is safer for breast augmentation — saline or silicone implants?
Both are FDA/CE-approved. Modern cohesive-gel silicone (gummy bear) implants from Mentor, Motiva, or Allergan dominate ~95% of cases because they feel more natural and have lower rippling. Saline is occasionally chosen for younger patients who prefer a smaller scar and easier rupture detection. We use only textured or smooth implants from manufacturers with 10-year warranty.
Is Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) safe? What about fat embolism risk?
BBL has historically carried a 1 in 3,000 mortality risk from fat embolism when fat is injected into the gluteal muscle. Memorial and Liv follow the 2019 Multi-Society BBL Safety Advisory: only subcutaneous (above-muscle) injection, ultrasound guidance, and no oversized volumes. Surgery is performed only by board-certified plastic surgeons in JCI hospitals with ICU on site — we do not work with garage clinics.
Can mommy makeover (tummy tuck, breast lift, liposuction) be done in one operation?
Yes, combined mommy makeover is performed in a single 5-7 hour operation if you are a healthy non-smoker with BMI under 30 and have completed breastfeeding for 6+ months. Total hospital stay is 2-3 nights and recovery in Turkey is 10-14 days before flying home. Combining procedures saves anesthesia, downtime, and cost (~25-30% less than separate operations).
Can old scars or keloids be revised?
Yes. Treatment depends on scar type: hypertrophic scars respond to intralesional triamcinolone + 5-FU and silicone sheeting; mature keloids need surgical excision followed by low-dose radiotherapy or pressure therapy. Atrophic acne scars are treated with subcision, fractional CO2 laser, or fat grafting. Realistic expectation: scars are improved by 50-80%, never erased.
What type of anesthesia is used for plastic surgery in Turkey?
Major procedures (rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, breast surgery, BBL) are done under general anesthesia with a board-certified anesthesiologist and full monitoring. Smaller procedures (eyelid surgery, scar revision, minor lipo) can be done under local anesthesia with sedation (MAC). All Memorial and Liv operating rooms meet JCI safety standards with ICU available 24/7.
What is the follow-up timeline after plastic surgery once I return home?
Standard follow-up is at 1 week (suture removal if needed), 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year — done via video call with the operating surgeon. Photos are uploaded through our secure portal. Final result is assessed at 12 months for rhinoplasty and breast surgery, 6 months for tummy tuck. Revision (if needed and clinically indicated) is provided at cost price within 12 months.
