What is the best treatment for kidney stones larger than 2 cm?
Stones >2 cm in the kidney are best treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) — a 1 cm flank incision with direct stone fragmentation, achieving 85-95% stone-free rate in a single session. Stones 1-2 cm can be treated with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) using a flexible ureteroscope and Holmium or Thulium laser. Memorial and Akdeniz perform 800+ stone procedures per year.
Is robotic prostatectomy better than open surgery for prostate cancer?
Da Vinci robotic radical prostatectomy offers less blood loss, shorter catheter time (7-10 days vs 14), and faster return of continence compared to open. Oncologic outcomes are equivalent when performed by surgeons with >500 robotic cases. Memorial and Liv robotic surgeons have completed 1,000+ cases each, with continence at 12 months in 85-92% and erectile function recovery in 60-75% of nerve-sparing candidates.
When should a couple have an andrology evaluation for infertility?
After 12 months of unprotected intercourse without pregnancy (6 months if the female partner is over 35). Male evaluation starts with two semen analyses 4 weeks apart, hormonal panel (FSH, LH, total testosterone, prolactin), scrotal ultrasound, and genetic testing if azoospermia or severe oligospermia. Memorial and Liv offer micro-TESE for non-obstructive azoospermia with 40-50% sperm retrieval rate.
Can a vasectomy be reversed, and how successful is it?
Yes, microsurgical vasovasostomy reverses vasectomy with 70-95% patency rate and 40-75% pregnancy rate depending on time since vasectomy (best results within 10 years). If the epididymal end shows no sperm, vasoepididymostomy is performed instead. Surgery takes 2-4 hours under general or spinal anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure.
Will I be incontinent after prostate surgery?
Stress incontinence is common in the first 4-6 weeks (use of 1-3 pads/day), improves to social continence in 80-90% of patients by 3 months and 92-95% by 12 months with pelvic floor (Kegel) physiotherapy. Persistent severe incontinence affects 2-5% and can be treated with male sling or AMS-800 artificial urinary sphincter. Pre-op pelvic floor training improves outcomes.
Is HoLEP better than TURP for an enlarged prostate (BPH)?
HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) is now considered the gold standard for prostates >80 g and matches TURP for smaller glands, with less bleeding, shorter catheterization (24-48 hours vs 3 days), and durable results (>10 years). HoLEP can be safely performed on patients taking blood thinners. Memorial and Liv urology departments offer both HoLEP and bipolar TURP.
Can my relative receive a kidney transplant in Turkey?
Turkey performs both living-related and deceased-donor kidney transplants for foreign patients under specific legal conditions — the donor must be a documented relative up to 4th degree, or spouse. Pre-transplant workup (cross-match, HLA typing, cardiac and infection screening) takes 3-5 days.
