QUESTIONS

Frequently asked about Paediatrics

How does a pediatric second opinion work at Turkish hospitals?
Submit your child's records (imaging on disc, lab PDFs, hospital summaries, current medication list) translated to English or Turkish. Within 5-7 working days, a board-certified pediatric subspecialist reviews the case and issues a written opinion with diagnostic and treatment recommendations. In-person consultation can follow with same-week appointment at Memorial, Liv, or Akdeniz.
What is the workup for suspected growth hormone deficiency?
Pediatric endocrinology evaluation includes growth chart review, bone age X-ray, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels, thyroid panel, celiac screen, and karyotype in girls. Two GH stimulation tests (clonidine + glucagon or insulin) confirm diagnosis if peak GH <10 ng/mL. Pituitary MRI rules out structural causes. Treatment is daily recombinant GH injections with quarterly monitoring.
How is moderate childhood asthma managed?
Treatment follows GINA pediatric guidelines: low-dose inhaled corticosteroid (fluticasone, budesonide) as controller, short-acting beta-agonist for rescue. Step up to ICS-LABA combination or leukotriene receptor antagonist if uncontrolled. Spirometry every 6 months from age 6, written asthma action plan, allergen testing, and inhaler technique review at every visit. Biologics (omalizumab) for severe allergic asthma.
What is the age limit for elective pediatric surgery?
Routine elective surgery (hernia, undescended testis, hydrocele, tonsillectomy) is typically scheduled from 6 months onward, with anesthesia safety the limiting factor. Cardiac and craniofacial procedures may be done earlier when clinically required. Memorial, Liv, and Akdeniz have dedicated pediatric anesthesiologists and PICU support for children of all ages including neonates.
What are NICU outcomes for extreme preterm infants under 28 weeks?
At Memorial and Liv level III NICUs, survival is around 85-90% at 26-27 weeks, 70-80% at 24-25 weeks, with intact neurodevelopmental outcomes in roughly 60-70% at 2-year follow-up. Care includes surfactant, non-invasive ventilation when possible, kangaroo mother care, breast milk feeding, and ROP and hearing screening before discharge.
How is catch-up vaccination handled for older children?
A pediatrician reviews the child's immunization record against the Turkish national schedule and WHO recommendations, identifies gaps, and builds an accelerated catch-up plan respecting minimum intervals between doses. Combination vaccines reduce injection burden. Serology (measles, hepatitis B, varicella) is checked when records are incomplete. Plan is completed within 6-12 months for most school-age children.
How is pediatric oncology multidisciplinary care organized?
Memorial Children's Hospital and Liv run weekly pediatric tumor boards with hemato-oncology, pediatric surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology. Treatment follows SIOP and COG protocols for ALL, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, brain tumors, and sarcomas. Bone marrow transplant unit, on-site pediatric radiotherapy, and psychosocial support with school continuation are part of standard care.
