How is Mako robotic-arm knee replacement different from conventional knee surgery?

This typically improves implant alignment within 1 degree and reduces soft-tissue trauma. Will I walk on the same day after a knee or hip replacement in Turkey?
Yes. Standard ERAS protocol at Memorial and Liv mobilizes patients 4-6 hours post-op with a physiotherapist and walker. Hospital stay is typically 3-4 nights, followed by 7-10 days at a partner hotel with daily physio before flying home. Full weight-bearing is allowed from day one with most modern implants.
When does a knee replacement need revision surgery?
Modern implants last 20-25 years in 90% of patients. Revision is indicated for aseptic loosening, periprosthetic infection, instability, or polyethylene wear, usually detected on follow-up X-ray and CRP/ESR blood markers. Turkish revision arthroplasty costs $12,000-16,000 vs $50,000-80,000 in Western Europe.
How long is recovery after ACL reconstruction?
Return to desk work is 2-3 weeks, jogging at 3-4 months, and pivoting sports (football, skiing) at 9-12 months once strength symmetry reaches 90% on isokinetic testing. Memorial uses hamstring or BTB autograft per surgeon preference and follows MOON/MARS rehabilitation protocols. Bracing is generally not required after the first 6 weeks.
Is there an age limit for hip replacement surgery?
No upper age limit if the patient is medically fit. We routinely operate on patients aged 75-88 after cardiology and anesthesia clearance (ASA I-III). For younger patients under 55, surgeons may prefer hip resurfacing or ceramic-on-ceramic bearings for higher activity demand and longer implant survival.
Do I need to stop blood thinners before joint replacement?
Yes. Warfarin is stopped 5 days pre-op, rivaroxaban/apixaban 48-72 hours pre-op, and clopidogrel 7 days pre-op, often bridged with LMWH if you have a stent or atrial fibrillation. Aspirin 81-100 mg is usually continued. Our coordinator sends a written bridging plan from the operating surgeon two weeks before travel.
When can I return to sport after a knee replacement?
Low-impact activities (cycling, swimming, golf, doubles tennis) resume at 6-8 weeks. Running and contact sports are generally discouraged because they accelerate polyethylene wear. Most patients return to skiing on intermediate slopes by 4-6 months if quadriceps strength is restored.
